Darwin 218Rachael Karm received her Master’s in Biology from Sonoma State University in 2022, where she studied bull kelp ecology. Her passion for northern California’s kelp forests led her to stay on as a research technician at Sonoma State, where she works alongside fellow technician Joel Huckeba to support coastal ecology and conservation field operations. Rachael manages off-site bull kelp cultures for both research and restoration purposes, and she helps lead a range of SCUBA-based projects focused on kelp forest monitoring and enhancement. She and her team outplant bull kelp along the Sonoma and Mendocino coasts, monitor kelp forest recovery across multiple sites, and contribute to efforts aimed at conserving and restoring these vital ecosystems following widespread declines.
