Joel received his Masters in Freshwater and Marine Biology in August of 2021 from the University of Amsterdam, Netherlands
Joel works as a research technician in the Hughes Lab alongside Rachael Karm to facilitate coastal ecology and conservation field operations. He leads the North Coast team for the California Estuary Marine Protected Area (EMPA) monitoring program, a statewide collaborative project that evaluates the health and function of estuaries through time. Joel and his team seasonally sample estuaries along the Marin, Sonoma, and Mendocino coastlines through protocols that characterize flora and fauna communities and explore the physical drivers affecting ecosystem conditions.
